While this compact crossover has a more whimsical name (Qashqai) in Europe, many things about it—including its sharp styling—should carry over to our market. One thing that won't, though, is a hybrid powertrain. We anticipate U.S. models will feature a gasoline-powered four-cylinder engine. At least Nissan will offer buyers the option of front- or all-wheel drive. And to complement its new exterior, the Rogue Sport boasts a modernized cabin with updated infotainment tech. The infotainment system’s software is uncomplicated, and its menu structure doesn’t follow conventional infotainment standards. Instead of a home menu on the touchscreen where users can make more specific choices, they must instead bounce from menu to menu using dedicated hard buttons that frame each side of the screen. It takes some getting used to at first, but the system eventually becomes easy to use while driving. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG What the Rogue Sport lacks in acceleration it makes up for in fuel economy, with front-wheel drive examples earning EPA ratings of 25 mpg city and 32 mpg highway. Unfortunately, its rivals are also parsimonious with fuel—even those that are outright quick such as the Kia Soul Exclaim. In our real-world highway fuel-economy testing, an all-wheel-drive Rogue Sport exceeded its 30-mpg EPA rating by 1 mpg, which is good even in this class of mini-SUVs. 2022 Nissan Ariya Pricing, Review, and Specs Nissan is expanding its line of electric vehicles with the 2022 Ariya SUV, which will go on sale in the U.S. in 2021. The Ariya will join the Leaf hatchback in the Nissan showroom and will offer up to 300 miles of driving range, which beats the Leaf's maximum of 226. The Ariya's design represents a shift from the current sharp, angular lines seen on many of Nissan's vehicles. The low, wide stance of the Ariya differentiates it from the Rogue and gives it a sportier look. Two different battery sizes will be offered—a 63.0-kWh battery is standard, and a larger 87.0-kWh pack is optional—as well as either front- or all-wheel drive. A host of driver-assistance features, infotainment tech, and convenience items will be included here, helping the 2022 Ariya compete with similarly sized EV crossovers, such as the Tesla Model Y and Hyundai Kona Electric. What's New for 2022? The Ariya is an all-new vehicle for Nissan. It features Nissan's new semi-autonomous driving system (ProPilot 2.0), which debuted on the Japanese-market Nissan Skyline sedan. The Ariya is said to deliver up to 300 miles of driving range, but only when equipped with the optional dual-front/rear-motor drive configuration and the larger 87.0-kWh battery pack. That puts it above the Leaf and other affordable EVs but under the base price of the Model Y. We're of the mindset that to successfully switch from gasoline to electricity, range is key, and if our estimation on price is correct, the larger battery pack could be a great value. Engine, Transmission, and Performance Unlike the Leaf, which comes only with front-wheel drive, Nissan is pulling from features developed in other cars, including the GT-R sports car's torque-split system, to offer optional all-wheel drive via a dual-front/rear-electric-motor configuration with 221 lb ft of torque. We estimate that the all-wheel-drive Ariya will zip from zero to 60 mph in less than 5.0 seconds, a feat that is similar to higher-end electric vehicles. The base front-wheel drive model will likely be slower, but we still expect it to offer peppy acceleration that's a characteristic of EV powertrains with a single motor and dual motor. Range, Charging, and Battery Life Nissan says the Ariya offers up to 300 miles of driving range per charge, and if that turns out to be true, it would be quite the step up from the Nissan Leaf's maximum range of 226 miles. Similarly sized vehicles include Jaguar's I-Pace and Audi's E-Tron, which have 234 and 204 miles of long range, respectively. Key rivals from Tesla offer claimed ranges of over 300 miles of range. The Ariya will be capable of charging at home on 110- or 240-volt outlets as well as at public charging stations and even DC fast-charging ports pretty amazing for a electric SUV. When the Ariya gets closer to launch, that information will likely be available. Nissan appears to have discarded every button possible in pursuit of a smooth dashboard that favors a sleek look to match the design of the exterior. Despite Nissan's claim that the Ariya's cabin is unlike a traditional automotive interior, its minimalistic theme appears to be its sole unique trait. Not that the cabin doesn't look like a nice place to spend time. A flat, low floor is said to increase the spacious feeling inside, and Nissan has incorporated its comfy zero-gravity seats into the design. Infotainment and Connectivity Nissan has also divulged details about the infotainment system and connectivity features, and it looks quite nice. Dual 12.3-inch displays serve as both the digital gauge cluster and the infotainment screen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and in-dash navigation should all be standard features. The Ariya concept that was shown in 2019 had a feature that allowed the car to sync with the schedule of the driver, so it can pre-heat or pre-cool the interior while it's parked and charging, and therefore not draw on the power from the battery. The concept also showed off technology that would allow the driver to use their phone to park the Ariya automatically from a nearby location using ProPilot's Remote Park, a system similar to Tesla's Smart Summon feature. Nissan hasn't said yet if these features will make it to the production model. Safety and Driver-Assistance Features The Ariya will feature ProPilot 2.0, Nissan's second generation of the ProPilot semi-autonomous technology, as an optional feature. The system allows drivers to remove their hands from the wheel in certain driving scenarios. Although we haven't tested this new setup, we liked the original ProPilot system when we used it in 2017—and if that's any indication of how version 2.0 will perform, our expectations are high. The design changes outside are no secret given the latest reveal of the fully updated truck. It seems that hard workers get full LED headlights and reworked backlights with some LED elements. While the 2020 Frontier Pro-4X we tested with the new powertrain didn't show a marked improvement in performance over the engine-and-transmission it replaced, we'll have to wait until we have an opportunity to drive the new Frontier before we can evaluate its performance and driving manners. We expect the 2022 Nissan Frontier will utilize a new V6 engine capable of producing 300 horsepower to be piped to the wheel via a seven-speed automatic transmission. Frontier’s next generation won’t be entirely new, as it will still share the platform as well with the Navara currently on the market. Nissan also seems to be refreshing the F-Alpha platform. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG Neither the EPA nor Nissan have announced fuel-economy estimates for the 2022 Frontier. Since we know it'll have the same V-6 powertrain that motivates the current generation, there's a good chance that the new one has similar government rating. That suggests it'll earn up to 18 mpg in the city and 24 on the highway. We'll have to wait for the official figures to be released and for our chance to test the new Frontier on our 75-mph highway route, which is part of our extensive testing regimen, before we can evaluate its real-world mpg. What's for sure is that its design and material quality can only be an improvement over the outdated and plastic-laden cabin that the current generation hosts. The list of available features is expected to expand, too, since you can't even get a heated steering wheel on the current version. Based on spy photos, we do know that the next Frontier will continue to be offered with an extended cab. A crew-cab model is also virtually a lock considering it's typically the most popular pickup-truck configuration. Both body styles suggest that a short and long cargo bed should also be on the roster. We expect frontier cabins to take a big leap. Basically, the interior of the Nissan Frontier 2022 takes the base from the previous generation, so there will be no major difference between the two. Most only small details typical of Nissan are differentiating. Nissan Frontier 2022 uses the same dashboard layout as the previous generation, this is not a bad thing because the driver-oriented layout used increases Nissan’s typical driving impression.
